Webfiles

The Webfiles system is used by faculty, staff & graduate students to securely host and share files. These files can easily be shared with other Webfiles users or with the general public by way of a ticketing system.

The server is hosted on-campus (it is not cloud-based) and storage capacity is capped at 2GB per user.

How do I share a file with someone not from UCI?

The best way to share a file with anyone is by creating a ticket. Once created, it will generate a unique URL that you can then share via email. Tickets have the added bonus in that they can be set to expire.

Learn how to create tickets here (under the heading "Share files or directories with specific non-UCI individuals.") On that page, you'll see lots of other great tips on how to use Webfiles.

Can I upload files to Webfiles without using a browser?

Yes, it's possible to mount your Webfiles directories on a PC or Mac as a shared drive using WebDAV, a protocol which allows you to edit remote files on a web server right from your computer. Here's how:

Windows

  1. From the Windows Start menu, click Computer.
  2. Within the Computer window that appears, click "Map network drive" in the ribbon menu.
  3. Within the Map Network Drive dialog, enter https://webfiles.uci.edu/UCInetID
  4. Click the two checkboxes at the bottom.
  5. Click Finish.
  6. In the window that appears, enter your UCInetID and password.
  7. Click the Remember my credentials checkbox.
  8. Click the ОK button.
  9. Now you should see a WebDAV drive that you can expand to view folders and files on your Webfiles account.
  10. You can access this drive in the future under the Computer listing in Windows Explorer.

macOS

  1. On a Mac, use the Connect To Server feature of the Finder. Select Go > Connect To, and enter https://webfiles.uci.edu/UCInetID and then click Connect.
  2. In the window that appears, enter your UCInetID and password then click OK. (Click the box to save your password in the Keychain.)
  3. Now you should see a WebDAV drive in the Finder that you can expand to view folders and files on your Webfiles account.
  4. You can access this drive in the future under the Finder.

NOTE: For an extra layer of security, use the Cisco VPN client first before starting the above instructions. For instructions on how to use the VPN, visit oit.uci.edu/help/vpn.

I've tried the steps above and I'm still having issues

  • Your full name
  • Your UCInetID (the first part of your email address, not your ID number)
  • A detailed description of the issue

Failure to provide this information will delay our response.
