Microsoft Software

Through a partnership between UCI & Microsoft, current students are eligible to download a free copy of Microsoft Office 365 ProPlus to their personal computer & mobile devices. In addition, starting in 2019 they can also download a free copy of Microsoft Windows.

Faculty & Staff whose departments are enrolled in the UC-MCCA program are eligible as well, and they should obtain their copy by selecting the Faculty & Staff link above. If you're not sure if your department is enrolled, you can check here or you can partner with your local CSC.

If you work for HS/UCIMC, you should not use the links above; instead, contact the HS Help Desk for assistance with getting a copy.

I'm a student and I'm having trouble.

The instructions outlined on the Microsoft Office 365 ProPlus for Students page must be carefully followed. The most common issues that students encounter include:

  • Skipping step 1. If you don't click the link to create the email forwarding record, you will not receive the email from Microsoft to download the software.
  • Entering the wrong email address in step 3. When you first visit Microsoft's website, make sure you enter the email address in the correct format:
  • Using the wrong password you created in step 5. When returning to Microsoft's portal at a later date to re-download the software, the username must be in the format and you must use the password you created when you initially setup the account. If you've forgotten the password, use their self-service reset tool on that page.

I'm a faculty/staff member and need help activating a Volume Licensed Product.

UCI runs its own KMS (Key Management Service) server which faculty and staff can use to activate their Microsoft products installed on their work computers. This activation service is for volume licenses and media only obtained by a CSC from OIT under the MS MCCA Agreement, or if it was purchased via SHI or the UCI Computerstore for use exclusively on university-owned systems.

Instructions on how to configure your computer to communicate with the KMS service can be found here under the heading "Microsoft Volume Licensing".

I'm getting the error 'Your account doesn't allow editing on a Mac.'

macOS users should follow the steps below to resolve the issue. Please note that you'll need admin rights to delete these files, so we encourage you to partner with your local CSC for support.

  1. Sign out of your account in Microsoft Office, quit all open Microsoft Office applications and remove them from your dock if present.
  2. Open Finder, Click 'Go' on the taskbar, and select 'Go To Folder' from the Menu.
  3. A textbox will appear, input the following where it says ‘Enter a Path’:  ~/library/Group Containers/
  4. Click 'Go'.
  5.  Press and hold the Command key while clicking each of these folders if present, and drag them to the trash.
    • UBF8T346G9.Office
    • UBF8T346G9.OfficeOsfWebHost
  6. Restart Microsoft Office, and then sign in with your account.
    • Note: You will need to choose one of the authentication methods (email or phone number) or else the error message will persist.
  7. If the issue persists, repeat Step 1 and the then go to your Library folder and open the folder Containers by following Steps 2-4. Press and hold the Command key while clicking each of these folders if present, and drag them to the trash.
  8. Reboot your Mac.

I need help with a Microsoft Office add-on or third-party plugin.

OIT's scope of support is to assist students with downloading their free copy of Office 365. Above and beyond that, please partner either with Microsoft or the add-on/plugin developer for support.

I'm a student/faculty/instructional staff member and would like a copy of Microsoft Windows and other titles like Project, Visio etc. How do I obtain them?

Other than the free copy of MS Office that is offered for personal use via the Office 365 ProPlus program, OIT does not offer copies of Windows or any other MS titles to students; however, we know of two departments who do offer these titles to their students for personal use.

  • ICS students can visit the Microsoft DreamSpark FAQ on their department's website for detailed info on how to get this software.
  • Engineering students can visit the Microsoft Imagine OnTheHub portal to obtain this software.

Faculty & instructional staff members can use the links above or can partner with their local CSCs for assistance.

I've tried the steps above and I'm still having issues
