Free Microsoft Windows for Students (Student Use Benefit)

Free Microsoft Windows 10 or Windows 11 Software for Students

As part of the Microsoft Student Use Benefit (SUB) program, OIT is now offering Windows 11 OR Windows 10 to current UC Irvine students at no cost. You can download your copy from OnTheHub, a Microsoft Partner web store.

Choose a Windows Version

Select one of the versions listed below to get started. When prompted, log in to OnTheHub using your UCInetID and password, and then follow the step-by-step instructions to order your free copy.

After you order the software from OnTheHub, you'll receive a confirmation email with guidance on how to download the software. Please note that you will only have 30 days from the time you register to download your free copy. In addition, you cannot order a license for both versions of Windows: you can only choose one.

WARNING: Windows 11 is a brand new OS as of mid-October 2021, and as with every new major operating system release, OIT cannot confirm that every application that we support will work correctly. Use Windows 11 at your own risk.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is eligible?

Currently enrolled students are eligible.

How long can I use this copy of Windows?

The license is yours to keep. You do not need to do anything to keep using it after graduation.

Can I register a 2nd time to get a 2nd copy?

No. If you attempt to submit a 2nd order, you'll receive an error message telling you that you've previously ordered the software.

How can I deactivate my Win 10 Education Product Key to reinstall on another machine?

While there is no way for us to give you a 2nd Product Key for Windows 10, you can try calling Kivuto (the vendor who manages the portal where you downloaded Windows 10) to see if maybe they can cancel your order so you can start over. Their number is (888) 396-1447. When you call them, give them the Product Key you were emailed when you downloaded the license from our OnTheHub portal and explain your situation. Unfortunately we cannot do this for you.

If they're unable to help, then you'll need to contact Microsoft and get their help with deactivating the license you installed on your original computer, since you technically don't have the license anymore. If you had access the computer, it would only take a couple of commandline commands to transfer the license. Visit https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/hub/4338813/windows-help?os=windows-10 to get support.

I forgot to download my copy of Windows before the 30-day limit expired.

Unfortunately we cannot retrieve your Windows 10/11 product key but Kivuto can. Please visit their website to find their contact info (you can call, email, or chat with them).

What is the difference between Windows 10 Education and Pro?
