Summary of Position Responsibilities:

Student web developers assist Student Life & Leadership IT (SLL-IT) staff with the development of PHP/MySQL form-based web applications such as intakes, editors, and search engines. Under close supervision, primary duties include writing new code, adapting existing code to new standards (re-writes), and basic web page design and maintenance. Development and production servers are UNIX systems (Mac/Linux) utilizing Apache, MySQL, and PHP (AMP).

Secondary duties include CSS styling, web design and graphic arts, server maintenance, email/web account processing, content management system support, documentation, and other duties as assigned.

Work is performed primarily in department shared office space. Developers are expected to follow existing department development standards and adapt to the coding style of the lead developers. Student work schedules can be adjusted for classes but regular weekly hours are required. Work-study eligibility appreciated but not required. Position open until filled.

Job Requirements

  • Familiarity with PHP, CSS, and HTML
  • Familiarity with web forms and POST/GET variables
  • Familiarity with SQL queries (MySQL knowledge preferred)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication with technical and non-technical collaborators

Desired Skills

  • Experience with software applications and version controls used in our development
    environment (including, but not limited to: Mac OS X, BBEdit, Git, phpMyAdmin, Sublime, Brackets, Eclipse)
  • Experience with modern web design (HTML5 and CSS3), JavaScript (e.g. jQuery, Ajax), and front-end frameworks (e.g. Bootstrap)
  • Experience with command lines and shell scripts
    (e.g. Terminal, Bash, PowerShell)
  • Familiarity with Student Life & Leadership programs on campus

Experience

Software development experience is required (web strongly preferred). Prior coursework is acceptable.
