Student Data Center Junior Technician

The OIT Data Center is hiring! We are looking for current students to join our team as a Data Center Junior Technician. This is a technical position, and candidates should be comfortable using computers and be quick to learn new computer applications. This is an onsite position, so you will be required to come into campus to accomplish your tasks. The OIT Data Center is open from 8 AM to 5 PM Monday Thru Friday (except holidays) and select non-business hours maintenance work periods.
Under the supervision of the Data Center Engineer, you will:
  • Rack and remove servers in the data center upon request and log these changes in the Data Center’s DCIM software (Data Center Infrastructure Management).
  • Leverage DCIM software to print reports regarding assets in the data center upon request.
  • Perform periodic audits of the DCIM by checking data center assets against their records in the DCIM software.
  • Utilize software tools to program and prepare our Intelligent power strips (rack PDUs) for use in the data center.
  • Perform periodic technical audits of our data room facilities
  • Replace old/broken/non-standard data center cabinets per our written procedure as needed.
  • Submit requests to the Network Team for cabling and IP assignment for various projects.
  • Submit Facilities Management requests for granting access (Lock Shop) to locations for UCI staff.
  • Oversee HVAC and Power maintenance at our data rooms to ensure work is being completed thoroughly and safely.
  • Maintain HVAC maintenance schedule to ensure our data rooms are being serviced consistently by Facilities Management.
  • Consult Data Center procedure manual to perform these listed activities and others as assigned.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Availability to work during normal business hours (8AM-5PM).
  • Must be able to work a minimum of 12 hours/week.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and within a team.
  • Must be able to work in a fast-paced and collaborative environment.
  • Ability to prioritize and organize effectively.
  • Must be patient and customer-centric.
  • A general understanding of electronics preferred.
  • Technical or IT background highly preferred.
  • General understanding of HVAC concepts preferred.
