UCInet Router Upgrade – Various Buildings on April 28, 2018 from 5 - 8am

Purpose: Scheduled Maintenance

Services Affected:

The network team will be performing router upgrades in various buildings on April 28th from 5 - 8am. The buildings undergoing the router upgrades are as follows:

1) Humanities Hall
2) Krieger Hall
3) Humanities Instructional Building

UC Learning Center – scheduled maintenance on Friday, April 20 from 6pm to 2am, Saturday, April 21

Purpose: Scheduled Maintenance

Services Affected:

The UCLC website will be available during the maintenance period; however, there may be brief outages as servers are rebooted.

Verano Place NAT Enforcement on Monday, April 30 to Thursday, May 17

Purpose: NAT (Network Address Translation) Enforcement in ResNet

Services Affected:

Dear Resident,

OIT has revised its policy with regard to home routers in Graduate and Family Housing. We are no longer recommending that users configure their routers as access points, with NAT and DHCP disabled. Instead, we now encourage you to set up your router with these features enabled, as you would in an off-campus home environment.

This policy change is being made in an effort to simplify network access and device setup for both ongoing and future residents. It will no longer be necessary for you to register your individual devices in order to bring them online in your residence. As long as your home router is registered and properly configured, every device that you connect to it will have access to the Internet.

Some of you have already made the switch, and the way to tell is to inspect the router itself. If the network cable is plugged into the Internet/WAN port (typically this port is a different color and/or set apart from the other LAN ports), there is nothing you need to do.

However, if the cable is plugged into one of the LAN ports, then you will need to reconfigure your router. To do so, visit the OIT Help Center (https://www.oit.uci.edu/help/) and under the Networking section, select Router Setup. The process involves resetting your router to factory settings and registering the Internet/WAN MAC address of the router. If you have any trouble, you can open a ticket in the Help Center and someone will be in touch.

We encourage you to complete the reconfiguration at your earliest convenience. Routers that are set up according to our legacy recommendations will continue to function until we implement policy enforcement in your building, during the month of May. Reconfiguring early will allow the most time for you to request and receive assistance and reduce the possibility of a lapse in service. We will send a reminder email shortly before the policy enforcement begins. Please see the rollout schedule below:

It is important to note that by registering the WAN MAC address of the router under your UCInetID, you are accepting unqualified responsibility for every device that connects through it. We recommend that you only permit access for users and devices that you would be comfortable registering yourself. In the event of an abuse complaint (security, copyright, or otherwise), OIT will block access and contact you as the responsible party.

Cascade Maintenance outage (unplanned) on Monday, April 2, from 5pm-6pm

Purpose: Unscheduled Maintenance

Services Affected:

An unplanned maintenance issue has been discovered with the production Cascade Server. This issue affects publishing, and currently only affects a limited number of sites. As a result, it will be brought offline at 5:00PM today, April 2 2018. The outage should last no longer than 30 minutes.

If you have any issues with publishing your sites, select open a ticket and reference “Cascade Publishing”

Humanities Hall (Bldg. 601) Power Outage on Friday March 30, 2018 from 6:00 AM to 8:00 AM

Purpose: Scheduled Maintenance

Services Affected:

Facilities will be conducting a planned power outage in Humanities Hall on Friday, March 30 2018 at 6 AM. Network & phone service will be unavailable during the maintenance.

Service will be restored by 8:00 AM.

Intercollegiate Athletic Building (625) – Power Outage on Saturday, March 31, 2018 to Sunday, April 1, 2018

Purpose: Planned Power Outage

Services Affected:

Facilities will be conducting a planned power outage in the Intercollegiate Athletic Building on Saturday, March 31, 2018. During the power outage network service will be unavailable.

Service should be restored by end of day Sunday, April 1, 2018.

Beckman Laser Institute – Scheduled Maintenance on Friday, March 23, from 5am-7am

Purpose: Scheduled Maintenance

Services Affected:

March 23: Beckman Laser Institute, Room 114 - Electrical Panel Shut Down - Scheduled to begin at 5:00am, ending at approximately 7:00am.

Planned Power Outage, No Network/Phone Service – Nat Sci II (Bldg 402) on Monday, March 19, 2018

Purpose: Planned Power Outage

Services Affected:

There is a planned power outage for Natural Sciences II that will start at 7:30 AM. Network and phone service will be unavailable during this maintenance window.

Service should be restored no later than 10 AM.
