Dear Resident,

UCI's Office of Information Technology has revised its policy with regard to home routers in the ICHA rental communities. We are no longer recommending that users configure their routers as access points, with NAT and DHCP disabled. Instead, we now encourage you to set up your router with these features enabled, as you would in an off-campus home environment.

This policy change is being made in an effort to simplify network access and device setup for both ongoing and future residents. It will no longer be necessary for you to register your individual devices in order to bring them online in your residence. As long as your home router is registered and properly configured, every device that you connect to it will have access to the Internet.

Some of you have already made the switch, and the way to tell is to inspect the router itself. If the network cable is plugged into the Internet/WAN port (typically this port is a different color and/or set apart from the other LAN ports), there is nothing you need to do.

However, if the cable is plugged into one of the LAN ports, then you will need to reconfigure your router. To do so, visit the OIT Help Center
(https://www.oit.uci.edu/help/) and under the Networking section, select Router Setup. The process involves resetting your router to factory settings and registering the Internet/WAN MAC address of the router. If you have any trouble, you can open a ticket in the Help Center (or email OIT@uci.edu) and someone will be in touch.

We encourage you to complete the reconfiguration at your earliest convenience. Routers that are set up according to our legacy recommendations will continue to function until we implement policy enforcement in your building, during the month of August. Reconfiguring early will allow the most time for you to request and receive assistance and reduce the possibility of a lapse in service. We will send a reminder email shortly before the policy enforcement begins. Please see the rollout schedule below:

A lapse in service may result if home router reconfiguration is not completed by the deadline dates above. For assistance, contact oit@uci.edu.
It is important to note that by registering the WAN MAC address of the router under your UCInetID, you are accepting unqualified responsibility for every device that connects through it. We recommend that you only permit access for users and devices that you would be comfortable registering yourself. In the event of an abuse complaint (security, copyright, or otherwise), OIT will block access and contact you as the responsible party.
