Network Monitoring and Privacy

The Office of Information Technology (OIT) is charged with operating the campus network (UCInet) and maintaining its security. The integrity of UCInet requires that every computing system or device connected to the network be kept secure. To ensure the safety and reliability of the campus network and systems, OIT’s Information Security Team uses various techniques that include routine systems monitoring of electronic communications transactional information.

The Security team is equally concerned with protecting UCInet, abiding by law and policy, and defending privacy within those limits. In the interests of transparency, we have documented the techniques we use, the network activity we monitor, the information we store, and the limits we respect. We encourage you to review this disclosure at

Please note that this disclosure has been updated to include recent changes to OIT’s systems, as well as the implementation of new University of California Threat Detection capabilities.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact IT Security at
