Office 365 Project

Background

When OIT began offering Exchange services, the underlying servers were hosted on campus.   OIT is now moving the campus Exchange service (calendar and email) from OIT-managed data center infrastructure to Microsoft’s Office 365 Education cloud service.  OIT will continue to be the service owner/provider for the campus, but the underlying Exchange infrastructure and applications will be hosted by Microsoft in their data centers located in the United States.

Office 365 offers many free Microsoft applications including: Exchange calendar and email, messaging and collaboration, project management, file sharing and content management, and online versions of Office applications.  Additional/optional applications and features are offered at educational discounted rates.

Office 365 Details

OIT has completed extensive pilot evaluation and testing of Office 365 Exchange, and has performed a thorough risk assessment, and has determined it will meet the campus needs as an alternative to locally hosted Exchange.

Recommendations

  • As with any other similar service on campus, OIT recommends reviewing guidelines on what data is suitable or unsuitable for use in cloud services before using Office365. Sensitive data governed by policy or regulations should not be introduced into Office365.  Please refer to OIT’s Cloud Services Guidelines.
