Configuring as an Access Point

Step 1: Resetting the Router

  • Unplug all ethernet cables from the router.
  • Plug the router’s power adapter into both the wall outlet and the router itself. Wait 30 seconds and make sure unit’s power light is on and steady.
  • Hold down the reset button for 15 seconds.

Step 2: Accessing Router Configuration

    • Plug your computer’s ethernet cable into one of the router’s numbered LAN ports.

(You should never plug any device into the port labeled “WAN” or “Internet”.)

  • Open your internet browser, and enter “192.168.0.1” in the address bar.
  • When prompted for a login, leave the Password field blank and click the Log In button. (The User Name should be left as “Admin”.)

Step 3: Administrative Password

    • Under the Tools tab, enter a new Admin Password for your device.

This is the password used to access your router’s configuration and management. This is NOT the same as the password you will use to get on your wireless network!)

  • Click on the button at the top of the page to Save Settings.

Step 4: Wireless Configuration

  • From the sidebar navigation on the left, select Wireless Settings.
  • Scroll to the bottom of the page, and click on the Manual Wireless Network Setup button.
  • Enter your desired network name under Wireless Network Name (Also called the SSID).

  • Scroll down to the Wireless Security section of the configuration page.
  • Choose WPA-Personal as a Security Mode.
  • Choose WPA2 Only as the WPA Mode, and choose AES as the Cipher Type.
  • Enter a Pre-Shared Key to protect your wireless network from intruders.
  • Click on the button at the top of the page to Save Settings.

Step 5: Disabling DHCP

(Failure to complete this step will result in your inability to access the network via your router.)

  • From the sidebar navigation on the left, select Network Settings.
  • Under the DHCP Server Settings heading, uncheck the box for Enable DHCP Server.
  • Click on the button at the top of the page to Save Settings.

  • Click OK on the windows that pop up.

Step 6: Cable Setup

  • Unplug the ethernet cable from your computer, and plug that same cable into your room’s network jack.

Step 7: Verify Connectivity

    • Connect your computer to the router:
      • Either via wireless, with the SSID and pre-shared key you established above.
      • Or via ethernet, plugging into another numbered LAN port.

(Again, you should never plug any device into the port labeled “WAN” or “Internet”.)

 

Verify Connectivity

In Windows Vista/7:

  • Open the Start menu, type “cmd“, and press Enter.
  • In the Command Prompt that opens, type “ipconfig” and press Enter.
  • Your IPv4 address should be of the form 169.234.XXX.XXX. (If this is not the case, return to Step 1 of the guide.)

In Mac OS X:

  • Open the Apple menu and select System Preferences.
  • Under the Internet & Wireless heading, click on the Network icon.
  • Your IP address should be of the form 169.234.XXX.XXX. (If this is not the case, return to Step 1 of the guide.)
