Secure Research Environment

Overview

The Secure Research Environment (SRE) is a service providing a secure, on-campus virtual server infrastructure for the UCI campus research community.

Security and Compliance

SRE currently supports FAR 52.204-21 Basic Safeguarding of Covered Contractor Information Systems (Basic Safeguarding). At this time, SRE is not able to comply with NIST 800-171 and there is no estimated timeline to achieving compliance. If your research project requires compliance with either NIST 800-171, or with any other framework, please consult with the Research Cyber Infrastructure Center (RCIC) on options.

Operating System Supported

At this time, SRE supports virtual servers running Microsoft Windows Server operating systems. Linux support may be added at a later date. SRE is not designed for physical server hosting.

History

SRE started as a proof-of-concept in FY16-17 between RCIC and the Office of Information Technology (OIT) for secure storage and computation, serving the School of Social Ecology research groups with the intent to scale to other secure research needs across UCI.

Key Security Controls

  • Access to the environment is restricted, and the environment itself is segregated into distinct areas giving each research team their own space to work in.
  • All user logins require two-factor authentication.
  • All transmission of data into and out of the environment is encrypted and logged.
  • All records and logs are subject to campus audit.
