Desktop Support Managed Standards

What are Managed Computing standards?

OIT uses remote computer management tools to provide efficient service and increase security for university-owned Windows and Apple computers.

Security

Operating System and Application Patching

Patching is performed each Thursday night between 9 am and 1 pm using BigFix for all OIT-supported computers. Machines are rebooted at 9 pm and 1 pm to ensure patches are correctly applied to each machine.

Encryption

All laptops supported by OIT Desktop Support belonging to a single staff member or shared by a department accessing P3/P4 data as defined by UC System-wide policy (UC Data Protection Level definitions) must be full disk encrypted. Laptops that do not meet this requirement may be deactivated until they are compliant. If a laptop is not capable of meeting this standard, it must be replaced. For any questions regarding this policy or for assistance with laptop encryption please contact the OIT Help Desk at (949) 824-2222.

Antivirus

Antivirus services are provided via Microsoft Defender. OIT ensures Defender is installed, and attached to our management systems, virus definitions are up to date, updates are acquired, and infections are detected for action.

Administrator Accounts

Clients are not allowed administrative access to their computers for security reasons.

Remote Assistance

Remote assistance by Desktop Support is provided by BeyondTrust Remote Support (née Bomgar). A technician must be granted permission to remote into your computer.

Printer Standards

Supported printers are listed on our hardware standards webpage. Printers must be networked.

Hardware Refreshes

Supported systems are listed on our hardware standards webpage. Replacement systems may not be given to other staff.

Asset Management

Detailed computer hardware and software information is automatically collected from managed computers to inform planning and support activities. The collected information includes hardware properties such as CPU, RAM, and video card. Software information collected includes an operating system, installation names and dates of software, and security settings and configuration details.
