WebAuth Decommissioning: January 2024

July 21, 2023

On January 16, 2024, WebAuth will officially be decommissioned and shut down. After that time, WebAuth will no longer be available and any request to the service will fail.

In early 2020, OIT began the journey to replace UCI’s home grown SSO, WebAuth, for a standards-based solution. With UCI adopting more Cloud vendors, integrating with WebAuth had become more challenging and difficult. As a result, we adopted SAML, which is the UC-adopted standard for SSO and is commonly supported by Cloud vendors.

Over the course of the last 3 years, hundreds of applications have migrated away from WebAuth and adopted Shibboleth, our new SSO service. Now with 90% of the applications migrated and most of the traffic shifted away from WebAuth, the time has come to fully decommission and shut down WebAuth.

We appreciate everyone that has migrated their applications and is currently still working on their migrations. This journey would not be possible without everyone’s support. For more information about the project please see the UCI Single Sign-on Project Page. If you have any questions, please contact oit@uci.edu.
