Student Data Warehouse Project

Quicklink(s)

The Student Data Warehouse will create an on-premises repository of historical, connected, documented, available, and accessible student data, to optimize UCI’s decision-making at strategic, tactical, and operational levels.

Student Data Warehouse (SDW) will consolidate information from various student systems in multiple departments, provide centrally-managed campus reports, and provide ad-hoc query tools and other self-service capabilities.

Establishing a consolidated SDW will provide the comprehensive, updated, complete, consistent, and accurate collection of student data that is vital for reporting, research, analysis, and analytics.

This mission will be accomplished by:

  • Adopting a governed process for managing the growth of the SDW over time, including intake and evaluation of requests for additional data to be added to the SDW, and prioritization of SDW work streams
  • Partnering with functional stakeholders to define business needs and requirements, and implement and maintain a data-quality feedback process
  • Providing a central source of official student data, along with outreach and training on data assets, enabling self-service reporting and analysis to all campus constituents, and reducing the workload on traditional custodians of the data
  • Developing tools and processes that facilitate governance of SDW data assets, ensuring compliance with best practices and data security standards
  • Adopting and providing tools, processes, training, and user groups to enable users to leverage data effectively
  • Standardizing, documenting, and informing users of the definitions, appropriate use, and governance of student data

Goals

  • Build various Data Marts that assemble Student Data throughout the life cycle of the Student experience
  • Develop ETL (Extract, Transform, and Load) processes in Informatica to collect data on a daily basis
  • Develop Census snapshots for official reporting
  • Build Tableau Data sources and COGNOS framework around the DataMart for reporting
  • Display definitions in the Metadata repository
