OIT provides secure, discounted access to Amazon Web Services (AWS) for UCI. AWS is a broadly adopted cloud platform, offering over 200 full-featured infrastructure and application services from data centers globally. All AWS services are “pay-as-you-use,” meaning no up-front contracts or payments are needed to get started.
AWS Cloud Security Responsibilities for UCI
Physical servers at UCI are embedded within a robust security framework. However, when transitioning to Amazon Web Services (AWS), the cloud services do not come with built-in security settings that align with the UCI campus’s security standards, such as IS-3 compliance.
- It is the responsibility of the Account Requestor/Owner to ensure that their AWS setup adheres to the necessary security and compliance mandates.

OIT’s AWS Cloud services allow campus departments and organizations to capitalize on the many benefits of enterprise cloud technologies without the overhead of learning how to provision, configure, and secure them properly.

Customers can submit a request for OIT to design and deploy managed server instances to their environment or opt to request an account to manage their own environment.
Native AWS Services
Can I pre-pay for AWS services and limit my expenses to the pre-paid amount?
Unfortunately, Amazon AWS does not offer a pre-paid service. UCI customers who request an account through OIT are responsible for tracking their AWS usage and ensuring their expenses do not exceed budgeted amounts. AWS provides the AWS Cost Explorer tool to help estimate costs in advance.
How do I pay for OIT AWS Cloud Services?
- Non-OIT customers must provide a valid KFS account number they are authorized to use for AWS expenses. All AWS expenses will be applied to the provided KFS account. Credit cards or PALCards are not necessary.
- OIT divisions and groups must provide a valid OIT ServiceNow project number to ensure expenses are associated with the appropriate OIT budget.
All AWS services are “pay-as-you-use.” The costs associated with your dedicated AWS account will be applied to the provided KFS account.
- OIT adds no additional costs.
- Each AWS service has a different cost.
Accounts under OIT’s AWS Organization receive the following UC-wide discounts:
- 17% base discount on AWS compute and application services
- 45% discount on AWS S3 storage
